Jail House Lawyer
In a recent New York Times feature, a man sentenced to 10 years for bank robbery spent his time in jail learning the law, eventually mastering one of the most difficult areas of practice: the United States Supreme Court’s writ of certiorari. A “writ of cert” is required upon appealing one’s case to the highest court, where it is often looked over by the justice’s clerks (i.e. a group of 25 year-old kids with zero life experience who decide the Court’s docket). Shon Hopwood began by writing a petition for a fellow inmate, then worked alongside his private counsel, and eventually the case received a 9-0 decision in his fellow inmates favor. After a string of victories, he know has decided to enroll in law school. One wonders how that character and fitness will go…..good luck, sir.
