GATLINBURG — The owners of a pair of family businesses face federal charges of income tax evasion, authorities said today.
Kevin M. Flannery, 63, Margaret A. Flannery, 61, Keith M. Flannery, 41, and Melissa A. Flannery, 39, each face a charge of conspiracy to evade taxes, according to U.S. Attorney Russ Dedrick. A federal grand jury indicted them last month.
Kevin Flannery also faces three charges of filing false income tax returns, and Margaret Flannery, his wife, faces four charges of filing false returns.
Federal authorities said the family, owners of Famous Fries and of Southland Car and Jeep Rental, kept two sets of books for each business — one legitimate set and one set that low-balled income.
The evasion scheme lasted from January 2001 to November 2006, authorities said.
